With a Clear Conscience - Deck Boys
Israel | 58 min
The story of five young conscientious objectors—Haggai Matar, Matan Kaminer, Shamri Zamaret, Adam Maor, and Noam Bahat—who chose to refuse enlistment in the IDF as long as it operates in the occupied territories. Their refusal stems from their desire to shift public opinion in Israel regarding the occupation. Director Uri Barbash ("Beyond the Walls," "Basic Training") closely follows these young men and their families before their trial, known as "The Refuseniks' Trial." The film documents the lengthy months of fall and summer 2003, during which they presented their motivations, beliefs, and well-articulated worldview to military court judges, who sentenced them to another year in prison. The five were released in September 2004. The film, produced for the Israel Broadcasting Authority, was never broadcast.
