Of Caravan and the Dogs
A daring documentation of the decline of the free press in Russia before and in the course of the invasion of Ukraine. The film follows a group of independent journalists and activist, including Nobel prize laureate Dmitry Muratov, who cope with censorship and prolonged prison sentences, highlighting the harsh moral and personal dilemmas of citizens and journalists living under severe oppression in Putin’s Russia. The film glorifies the journalists’ desperate struggle to uphold the value of truth in a country locked out of the outside world. Using rare video footage, the film, shot during a decisive year, before and after the invasion, presents the last defenders of democracy in Russia and offers hope for a different future, elsewhere as well.
